Brian Damage
It’s Saturday and today we have ’This Week in Wrestling’, the 33rd of 2024. Today Brian talks about the health status of Vince McMahon and shares all the best wrestling content from this week. (WARNING!!!Some NSFW content inside)I REPEAT…NSFW Content!
No Longer In-Vince-Able
It has been reported this week, that former owner of WWE, Vincent Kennedy McMahon is not in the best of health. This coming from his estranged wife Linda. She said that Vince’s health is rapidly deteriorating. What exactly is the health issue? Nobody knows for sure right now, but certainly some have questioned the legitimacy of his sudden decline in health. As we are all aware, there is a very serious sexual harassment lawsuit against him by a former employee. Some say that this is all to gain sympathy from the courts moving forward.
While that scenario is completely plausible, Vince is getting up in age. He is currently 78 years old, ready to turn 79 in just a few more days. While Vince has always been the embodiment of health and fitness, father time waits for no one. Definitely, not having WWE to rely on each and every day, must be hard on the perennial workaholic, no matter how many billions he has in the bank. To suddenly stop what you were well accustomed to be doing day in and day out for years and years….may have taken its toll on him.
As much crap as Vince has done both personally and professionally, there is no question he changed the face of professional wrestling. Out from the regional gymnasiums and dark, smoky venues…to imitating the old circus business model and taking the business across the country and around the world. WWE is a wrestling juggernaut because of Vince McMahon. Some old school wrestlers and historians think he ruined pro wrestling, while others think the exact opposite. The fact of the matter is, in the age of cable TV and the internet especially…wrestling needed to adapt and change. It would have perished otherwise.
McMahon was loved and hated as the owner of the top wrestling/sports entertainment company in the world and both can make very strong cases for either one. As much as a visionary as he was in his early years in the business, he definitely lost quite a few steps in his final years in power. Vince’s ideas were becoming very passé and outdated. A change needed to happen and because of that change WWE is better for it. Vince was and perhaps still is his own worst enemy. He screwed over many a talent, rode wrestlers into the ground and treated several women like sides of beef in a meat market.
As much as he was a new school type of promoter in the early 1980’s, he was still very old school in some of the very dirty, unscrupulous tactics he used to make him and his company billions. I know this sounds very much like an obituary and I don’t mean it to be. There is a good side and dark side to Vince McMahon. Whatever the condition he is in, we wish him well. A genius, a visionary, a tycoon, a scumbag, a tyrant and degenerate…all wrapped into one individual.
**UPDATE**
“Vince’s health is fine. We have no idea where the rumor that he had health issues came from, but it is not true.” ~Vince McMahon’s attorney Jessica Rosenberg
Daring or Delusional? AEW is All In
It was announced this week that All Elite Wrestling will be holding the All In pay per view at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas next year. It seems crazy to think that this is a sound business move from Tony Khan and AEW considering their issues with filling up arenas across the country for shows. On the other hand, they have a year to build this card up and with some heavy advertising and promotion…it just might shock many people.
Look, AEW has a very stacked and talented roster, there is no debating that. What is debatable, is if this crew can fill up a stadium in the United States. They couldn’t do it on the international level in England at Wembley…although they did get a rather large crowd. I admit, I admire Khan’s guts and bravado. We spoke about Vince McMahon and all the risks he took to make WWE what it is today, why not do the same for Tony Khan? It seems overly ambitious, but never underestimate wrestling fans to show up at an “event.” With the right card and just the right amount of buzz, All In Texas could be a home run for AEW.
With that said, they will need a new TV deal and something tells me that news is very imminent as well. I don’t think Khan would make this deal without something else cooking in the kitchen so to speak. Let’s hope that is the case.
