Band committees began the planning of themes for their group's costumes and steelbands and calypsonians began the composing of new songs and practice for the competitions. The research committees of the bands often spend many months developing their costumery to the greatest authenticity through available illustrations and literature. These costumes are then built with a high standard of craftsmanship in cc tume design, metal, leather and bead work, paper mache and wire bending.
This growth of artistic talents goes along with the exciting new sound developments by the steeJbands and the popular new calypso lyric compositions dealing with current events, scandals, humor and others. Band groups may range in number from 50 to 2000 persons and may have several sections each with a king and queen and their steelband. These bands may portray historical events, fantasy, soldiers, sailors or any other number of characters. Costumes are getting more elaborate each year, with sor.e king and queen headdresses weighing as much as 50 pounds or more. With Sunday, Dimanche Gras, comes the culmination of all the competitions for- the steelbands, calypso kings, and king and queen of the bands.
The calypso king is chosen on the basis of originality of lyrics and best sounds. The queen contestants parade their fantastic costumery with gigantic ornate headdresses bedecked with jewels, feathers, glittering papers and other decorative ornaments.
